For this reason, many investors are looking for ways to avoid stock market volatility whilst still achieving an attractive return. And this is exactly where P2P lending comes in.

This asset class has become increasingly popular in recent years among investors seeking higher potential returns. But is investing in P2P lending the best investment strategy for you, and how high are the potential returns really?

In today’s post, you’ll learn what P2P lending is, which platforms are relevant, and what opportunities and risks are involved for you.

In brief

P2P lending is becoming an increasingly popular asset class among investors.

P2P lending allows investors to further diversify their portfolio and insulate themselves from stock market volatility.

On many peer-to-peer lending platforms, investors can achieve annual returns of up to double digits – generally speaking, the higher the return, the higher the risk.

Regulated P2P lending platforms, in particular, are attractive to investors as they offer additional security when investing and thus provide better protection for the investment.

What exactly are P2P lending and how do they work?

P2P stands for ‘peer-to-peer’, meaning person-to-person. Unlike traditional bank loans, borrowers here borrow money directly from private investors like you and me. This usually takes place via an online platform that connects both parties.

Here’s how it works:

Borrowers submit a loan application to the loan broker

The loan broker checks the borrower’s creditworthiness and grants the loan.

To raise the necessary capital for the loan, they list the loan on a P2P platform.

As a private investor, you can invest in these loans and make your money available for financing.

You receive regular interest payments on your invested capital.

The advantage for borrowers: unlike with banks, the requirements are drastically reduced and therefore easier to meet. Depending on the provider and type of loan, borrowers range from private individuals with short-term financial needs to companies looking to finance projects or liquidity.

In return, the interest rates on such loans are comparatively high. This, in turn, makes them attractive to investors, who can thereby achieve attractive returns.

Some platforms allow you to automatically spread your money across many loans at once. With others, you select the loans manually or use your own filters via Auto-Invest. You can often invest from as little as around €1. This is ideal for beginners who want to start with small amounts and keep their risk low.

The best-known European P2P lending platforms include:

Mintos

Debitum Investments

ViaInvest

LANDE

TWINO

Indemo

On platforms such as Mintos, TWINO, Debitum Investments and ViaInvest, money flows from private investors to the P2P platform. Many consumer loans run for just 4 to 6 weeks, and you usually receive interest monthly or even daily. This allows you to reinvest your money straight away and benefit from the compound interest effect. This accelerates wealth accumulation and lets your portfolio grow even faster!

I find P2P loans particularly attractive for these reasons:

Regular cash flow: Short terms allow for quick reinvestment, often with weekly or daily interest payments.

Low entry barrier: You can finance individual loans from as little as €10 and spread your risk widely.

Passive investing: Auto-invest features or providers with automatic diversification handle the selection for you.

Good diversification: You can spread your capital across countries, loan types, providers and buy-back mechanisms.

Virtually no correlation with the stock market: As can be seen in my portfolio, my P2P investment has virtually no correlation with my other asset classes. That is why it is important to choose the longest possible investment horizon. A sensible investment horizon is often three to five years.

Question 2: What does the rest of my portfolio look like?

Investing in P2P loans only makes sense if the rest of your portfolio is also taken into account. If you own a property or are heavily invested in shares, P2P loans can help you diversify your portfolio and thus spread your risk.

Question 3: Have I already built up my emergency fund?

Young investors in particular are often keen to start building their wealth as quickly as possible. However, they frequently overlook one essential foundation: an emergency fund.

Before you start with P2P lending, it is also advisable here to have several months’ salary set aside as a reserve, so that you are not reliant on your investment in an emergency.

Question 4: How high is my personal risk tolerance?

P2P loans are popular primarily because of their higher potential returns. But as returns rise, so does the risk. Before you start investing in P2P lending, you should always honestly assess your own risk tolerance.

Are you prepared to absorb temporary losses? How do you react to loan defaults? And would you still be able to sleep soundly if platforms were to falter?

Question 5: How long do you want to commit for?

The investment term for many P2P lending is 30 days, which is extremely short. But there are also loans that run for several years. So it depends on your personal investment strategy as to how long-term you wish to invest.

The longer you commit, the higher the potential interest you can earn usually tends to be.

Question 6: Do I enjoy investing in P2P loans?

Personally, I really enjoy investing in P2P loans, as the platforms offer me, as an investor, a wide range of customisation options. Of course, you can also take a more passive role, but the important thing is that you enjoy this type of investment.

How do you get started with P2P lending?

Once you know what matters, getting started is easier than many people think. These are the steps I took myself when I started investing in peer-to-peer loans:

1. Choose the right platform

Before you invest any money, you need a P2P platform that suits your goals.

Ask yourself:

Do you want to invest passively, without much effort? Then Bondora Go & Grow, for example, could be a good choice.

Do you want to select specific loans, filter by LANDEr or actively manage risks? Then take a look at Debitum Investments, for example.

In any case, make sure the platform is reputable, transparent and regulated. Also read reviews from other investors to get an insight!

2. Open and verify your account

In most cases, registration is done entirely online. You will usually need:

An email address

A valid ID or passport

Bank details for deposits and withdrawals

The whole process often takes just a few minutes.

3. Deposit funds

Once verified, you can top up your account. This is often done via SEPA transfer or credit card. I recommend starting with an amount you’re comfortable with, for example €100 to €500, to gain some initial experience.

4. Invest, monitor, optimise

You decide how your money should be invested. Depending on the platform, this happens either automatically or by selecting criteria such as term or country of origin.

Once you start investing, you can:

Track repayments and interest

Adjust settings

Reinvest profits

To get started, I definitely recommend an automated solution where you don’t have to make constant decisions. In your user account, you’ll often find a dashboard with all the key information. This way, you can keep track of everything at all times!

5. Pay tax on profits (don’t forget!)

Interest from P2P loans counts as investment income and is subject to tax (depending on where you live). Many accounts offer an automatic tax report or an export function for your earnings.

It’s fairly straightforward at first, but if you invest regularly, you should keep an eye on the tax implications right from the start.

Conclusion: A strong addition to the portfolio

P2P lending platforms have been an increasingly popular asset class for investors for several years. They often offer attractive returns and are generally not affected by stock market fluctuations.

Before investing in P2P loans, investors should always consider their investment horizon and risk tolerance, as loan defaults and platform issues can occur.

Once the decision to invest in P2P lending has been made, investors can choose from a range of EU-regulated platforms, some of which have established themselves over the years through a long track record and robust performance.

If you’re ready to diversify your portfolio with P2P loans, take a look at my current P2P loan ranking or my Bondora review to find out more about this exciting asset class.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Are P2P lending a safe investment?

As with any investment, investors should carefully consider the risks involved.
