Those who invest in shares or ETFs benefit not only from price increases, but also from regular distributions.

The topic of dividends is particularly exciting, especially for brokers such as Trade Republic. The platform makes it possible to invest inexpensively and easily. However, many investors are wondering how Trade Republic dividends work in detail, when payments are made and what to do in the event of a problem.

In brief:

You are only entitled to dividends if you hold the share or ETF on the ex-date. The payment is made a few days to weeks later by the company or ETF issuer.

You can find the dividend credit in the app under ‘Income’ or ‘Documents’. There is no central overview of all payments. However, you can quickly and easily create one yourself.

Dividends are subject to withholding tax (approximately 26%) and are automatically deducted. With an exemption order, you can keep up to €1,000 per year tax-free.

How does dividend payment work at Trade Republic?

Once you own a share or ETF that pays dividends, Trade Republic checks on a specific date (known as the ex-date) whether you are entitled to the payment. This date is usually immediately after a company’s annual general meeting or, in the case of ETFs, after the issuer’s distribution date.

To receive the dividend, you must hold the relevant share in your securities account at least overnight on the ex-date. If the security is purchased later, you will not receive any distribution for this period.

After the ex-date, it usually takes a few days for you to receive the money. The actual payout (also known as payday) can be viewed on the issuers’ websites or in the Trade Republic app.

On the payment date, the dividend will be credited to your securities account and you will receive a statement with all the relevant tax information. If you hold international shares, the dividend will be converted into euros. In this context, it is advisable to familiarise yourself with the Tade Republic exemption order in order to avoid unnecessary tax deductions.

Why is the ex-date so important for dividends?

The ex-date is the decisive date on which it is determined whether you, as a shareholder, are entitled to receive the dividend. If you hold the share in your securities account on this date, the dividend will be paid out later. It is therefore not sufficient to buy the share on the day of distribution.

The record date usually follows one or two days after the ex-date. It serves accounting purposes and is less relevant for you as an investor. It is important to note that only those who own the shares at the close of trading on the day before the ex-date are entitled to the dividend.

What are dividends?

Dividends are earnings that a company or ETF distributes to its shareholders. Anyone who holds the shares in their securities account on the ex-date receives the payment. They represent a share in the company’s profits.

These deadlines apply to both individual shares and ETFs. Even though ETFs are less volatile, the same rules apply as for shares. If you are interested in regular distributions, ETFs with monthly dividends could also be an exciting option.

When does Trade Republic pay dividends?

The period between the ex-date and the actual payment of the dividend varies. While some companies pay their dividends just a few days after the ex-date, others may take up to several weeks.

This is because Trade Republic itself does not pay dividends, but only acts as a platform. The payout is made by the respective company or the issuer of the ETF.

For example, if you own a Deutsche Telekom share and the ex-date falls on a Monday, the payment date may be as early as Friday of the same week. Or it may be two weeks later. You can find this information in the app under the respective security or directly on the company’s website.

It is also important that your securities account is managed correctly throughout the entire period. Errors in custody or allocation by the custodian can result in dividends being paid late or not at all. Tax audit processes can also delay the credit entry. In the case of foreign dividends, currency conversion can also lead to longer processing times.

Type of security

Processing time

German shares

2 to 5 working days

US shares

5 to 15 working days

ETFs

1 to 20 working days

Where can I see the dividend at Trade Republic?

Once the dividend has been credited, you will find the corresponding entry directly in your portfolio. To do this, open the Trade Republic app and proceed as follows:

Go to your portfolio.

Select the appropriate share or ETF.

Scroll down in the securities view.

Under ‘Income,’ you can see the dividends you have received.

For details, click on the respective booking.

In addition, Trade Republic creates a document containing all tax-relevant information for each dividend payment.

Is there a Trade Republic dividend overview?

A frequently requested feature is a central overview of all dividends received, preferably with an annual review. Even if the app does not offer this function directly, you can ensure transparency yourself in just a few simple steps.

In the Trade Republic app, you can review all dividend statements in the ‘Documents’ section. There you will find a PDF file for each payment, listing the gross amount, deductions and net amount. You can use this data to create your own individual overview in Excel.

At Trade Republic, receipts are sorted chronologically. This allows you to track your earnings retrospectively without any gaps. For example, for tax or personal evaluation of your dividend ETFs.

It’s even easier with external tools such as Portfolio Performance or similar apps that automatically record your dividends and display them graphically. Be sure to pay attention to the privacy policies and check whether these providers are compatible with Trade Republic.

Tip for the dividend overview:

Nutze die Dokumente-Funktion für Einzelabrufe

Erstelle dir eine Excel-Liste für monatliche Auswertungen

Suitable apps offer automatic evaluation

Here list item

If you are looking for more information about neobrokers, the Northern Finance Blog provides information on other exciting topics. What now?

Are you waiting for your dividend but don’t see any money coming in on the app? Don’t worry, this happens more often than you might think. It’s important to systematically check the causes and take targeted action.

Why is the dividend not displayed in my securities account?

If your expected dividend does not appear in the app, there may be several reasons for this. In most cases, it is not due to Trade Republic itself, but to processes that take place in the background. For example, at the issuer, the depository or during currency exchange for international securities.

First, you should clarify whether you actually purchased the security in time. The share or ETF must have been booked into your securities account no later than the day before the ex-date. Otherwise, you are not entitled to dividends.

Another reason may be that the payment has not yet been made. Especially in the case of foreign shares or ETFs, the distribution can sometimes take several weeks. During this time, no entry will be visible in your securities account. This can be confusing, but it is no cause for concern.

Finally, there are also technical reasons: updates in the app, faulty synchronisation or a delay in importing the booking. In all these cases, it helps to take a look under ‘Documents’ or to log out and log back into the app.

What to do if you have not received your Trade Republic dividend?

In rare cases, you may not receive a payout despite being entitled to a dividend. This is particularly annoying. But there are specific steps you can take to get your money after all.

Check your holding position: Did you really own the security on the ex-date? If not, no dividend is payable.

Compare paydays: Check the company or ETF provider’s website to find out when the payout is scheduled.

Search the app: The payment may already have been received under ‘Documents’ or ‘Transactions’, even if it is not prominently displayed.

Contact support: If all checks prove unsuccessful, write to customer support via the app with a detailed description of the problem.

Many users report similar cases in forums or on social media. The good news is that in almost all cases, the payment was posted or correctly displayed after a brief enquiry. Trade Republic’s experience shows that their support team usually responds helpfully in such cases.

A systematic approach also helps to maintain trust in the broker. Anyone who receives regular dividends should archive their documents and check their entries on a monthly basis. This increases security and ensures that no payments are lost.

Can dividends be automatically reinvested with Trade Republic?

Many investors dream of the compound interest effect, where dividends are reinvested directly, generating additional growth. But does this happen automatically at Trade Republic?

How does dividend reinvestment work?

Trade Republic does not currently offer automatic dividend reinvestment. This means that when you receive a dividend, it remains as cash in your securities account. You must therefore actively take steps to reinvest the money.

This has advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, you have complete control over what happens to the money. On the other hand, you need to be disciplined enough to reinvest regularly. For long-term investors, however, this is a crucial factor in building wealth.

You can use the money from dividends, for example, to buy additional shares in your favourite ETFs or to build up new stock positions. This is particularly useful for the best ETFs, that you already have in your portfolio. This way, your share will grow continuously.

If you want to use dividends particularly efficiently, a savings plan based on a dividend ETF or ETFs with monthly dividends is an interesting option. Although these distributions are not automatically reinvested either, you can continuously expand your positions through regular savings rates.

What are the advantages of dividend reinvestment?

Those who reinvest dividends benefit twice: firstly from the distribution itself, and secondly from the additional growth in their portfolio. The whole process is based on the well-known principle of compound interest. Small amounts grow exponentially over the years.

Let’s take an example: you receive a monthly dividend of €50. Instead of leaving the money untouched, you use it to regularly buy new shares in an ETF. After a few years, you will not only have made potential capital gains, but also generated further dividends.

Many investors also use dividends to offset fluctuations or build up reserves for weak stock market phases. But the biggest advantage lies in the discipline you develop when you reinvest regularly.

This works best if you set yourself a reminder after each distribution or set up an automated workflow with order templates. This allows you to reinvest the money straight away. And without much effort.

Good to know:

If you want to automate the reinvestment process, Trade Republic does not yet offer a solution, but it is worth checking the ‘Documents’ section regularly and staying active. This is especially true for monthly distributing ETFs or shares.

What should you bear in mind regarding tax when it comes to Trade Republic dividends?

Many investors forget that dividends are taxable in Germany. The so-called withholding tax is currently 25 per cent, plus 5.5 per cent solidarity surcharge and, where applicable, church tax.

Overall, around one third of your distribution may go directly to the tax office as tax liability.

Foreign shares and ETFs are usually subject to withholding tax. This is deducted directly at source by the country of origin of the dividend before the payment is credited to your clearing account at Trade Republic.

Germany has concluded double taxation agreements with many countries, which means that part of this tax can be credited against your German withholding tax. In practice, however, the full creditable amount is not always automatically taken into account.

Under certain conditions, you can partially reclaim the excess withholding tax paid via your tax return.

The good news is that Trade Republic automatically pays these taxes for you. So you don’t need to do anything as long as your earnings do not exceed the saver’s allowance of €1,000 (for single people) or €2,000 (for married couples) per year.

To ensure that the tax deduction is calculated correctly, you should definitely set up a Trade Republic exemption order. This is the only way to ensure that your allowance is automatically taken into account. Without this order, tax will be withheld from the first dividend onwards, even if you remain below the allowance.

Taxes when investing at a glance

Withholding tax: 25%

Solidarity surcharge: 5.5% on tax

Church tax: optional, depending on religious affiliation

Exemption order: up to €1,000 tax-free (single persons)

Dividende (brutto)

Total tax deduction

Payment (net)

100 €

26,38 €

73,62 €

500 €

131,88 €

368,12 €

1.000 €

263,75 €

736,25 €

Distributions from ETFs are treated in the same way as share dividends.
